Tractor-trailers undergo a lot of wear and tear on the road. As such, if you have a truck, you must remain diligent about performing preventive maintenance between trips; otherwise, you may find yourself in need of truck repair en route. Here are some of the most common issues that keep big rigs from making their deliveries on time—and how to prevent them.

3 Common Issues That Warrant Semi-Truck Repairs

1. A Malfunctioning Radiator

If the radiator malfunctions, the engine will overheat and towing will probably be necessary. In addition to performing regular preventive maintenance, you can prevent radiator issues by topping off all the fluids and addressing any problems that are signaled by a “check engine” light before every trip.

2. A Defective Alternator

If it loses power, you may notice dimmer headlights or dashboard lights. If the alternator dies entirely, you won’t be able to operate the vehicle at all. To avoid these issues, change this mechanism before it starts losing power. The average alternator lasts for about five to eight years or 50,000 to 100,000 miles.

3. Brake Failure

Because of the heavy loads they carry and the number of miles they travel, tractor-trailers tend to wear through brake systems relatively fast. A lot of variables will determine just how long a truck’s brakes last. If the brakes seem sticky or less responsive than usual, bring the vehicle in for an inspection right away. As for preventing brake failure on the road, your mechanic can help you devise a brake maintenance schedule based on the specific demands you place on the vehicle.
