Sunspots, also known as age spots or livers spots, are a skin issue many people will deal with. While not cancerous, they can be unappealing. Luckily, they’re treatable, and you can be confident you don’t develop anymore with a few preventative steps. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know to preserve your skin quality.

Your Guide to Sunspots

What Are They?

Sunspots are dark, freckle-like spots that appear on the skin. Color ranges from tan to black, and they generally manifest on the face, shoulders, upper bank, and hands. Sunspots are caused by long-term sun exposure. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, your body will produce more melanin to protect your skin from the UV rays. More melanin gradually leads to darker skin spots, and sunspots will develop when it’s bunched together.

Removal

There are several removal options to explore. A dermatologist may use cryotherapy—removing them with liquid nitrogen—laser or pulsed light therapy, or microdermabrasion—which removes them through exfoliation. Chemical peels can also be effective. Speak with professionals to determine which treatment option is best for your skin.

To prevent sunspots going forward, you must wear at least an SPF-30 sunscreen any time you go outside.
