A few years later, elastic material was invented, which led to tighter bathing suits that paved the way to the bikini.

The Bikini and Beyond

The first bikini was released in 1946, although it was very controversial and it took a long time for the public to accept it. Bikinis eventually became more mainstream after celebrities began wearing them in the 1960s.
