Do’s & Don’ts of Garbage Disposals October 17, 2019

Do’s & Don’ts of Garbage Disposals, St. Paul, Minnesota

Your garbage disposal is one of the hardest working appliances in your home. It hides under your sink and disposes of waste for you to minimize the mess in your kitchen. But, they can also be the cause of plumbing issues you might have in your home. To avoid major problems with your pipes, here are a few do’s and don’ts of using a garbage disposal.

Do:

Use grease-fighting dish soap.

Using a dish soap that cuts through grease and food grime is a fantastic way to help your disposal before anything goes down the drain. Grease and fat solidify in your disposal or further down your pipes, causing major clogs or other plumbing problems. With a grease-fighting dish soap, you will prevent these substances from solidifying as they leave your home.

Run cold water frequently.

Running cold water is another way to get rid of the grease and fat that makes it into your disposal. As soft solids, these substances are easily ground up and flushed away. Plumbers recommend running water while using your disposal to help waste exit your home without any trouble.

Check the disposal for unwanted items.

Before you run your disposal, plumbingcheck for unwanted items such as bones, bottle caps, silverware, or jewelry. These items can accidentally fall into your unit and cause significant damage to the grinding mechanism if caught in the drain. You should always check to avoid problems down the road.

Don’t:

Use your hand to retrieve items.

When retrieving unwanted items from your disposal, avoid using your hand. The grinding gear is very sharp, and you risk getting cut as you dig around. Instead, use a pair of tongs to get the food or item out of the disposal. Make sure the unit is off before attempting to retrieve anything.

Dispose of bones.

Bones of any kind are too big and hard for your disposal to grind up. Large animal bones from steaks or pork chops are especially dangerous and will cause significant damage to your disposal. You should always discard these items in the trash, so you don’t have an unwanted plumbing issue.

Discard eggshells.

While eggshells seem brittle and can smoothly go down the drain, they are a danger for garbage disposals. When they’re ground up, the small bits of the shell stick to the grinding gears and cause them to stop working. This situation is a significant problem, and you should avoid it. Instead, toss your eggshells in the trash, and you won’t worry about lousy plumbing because of them.
