Exit Realty Upper Midwest is a residential and commercial real estate company with more than a decade in the industry handling everything from real estate investing, real estate mergers and acquisitions, to getting clients into their dream homes. So believe them when they say don’t embrace design trends that turn home buyers off. They’ve seen too many HGTV-inspired rooms that frankly just don’t translate well to potential buyers. Most of the hottest interior design trends aren’t generic enough to appeal to a wide array of people. Buyers want to picture themselves in your home.

If it’s time for you to enter the housing market, here are a four key trends Exit Realty suggests you avoid.

  • Bold Paints: Potential buyers are turned off by boldly painted walls. Bold colors are “in” one moment, “out” the next. They’ll immediately date your home. You want your home to appear timeless, so stick with light, neutral paint such as beige, gray and white. And keep colors consistent throughout the home.
  • Wallpaper: Another turnoff is wallpaper. It’s such a personalized choice. And if the potential buyer doesn’t like the one you made, they only see what a time consuming task it’ll be to get rid of it. Even just one bold wall is enough to scare away potential buyers. Consider removing the paper and repainting the wall something neutral instead.
  • Wall-To-Wall Carpeting: Who would have thought having lush, soft carpeting underfoot would be design trend? It’s all about hardwood floors now. Potential buyers see carpet and think about the dirt, germs and odors they trap..Buyers don’t want the hassle of professionally cleaning a carpet just to move in. Plus, carpets mean stains. A light carpet will be hard to keep up if you have kids or pets; a dark carpet can make a room feel small. Hardwood floors, however, are easier to maintain, never go out of style, and work with any décor.
  • Converted Rooms: Maybe you thought an in-home yoga studio was a better idea than a guest bedroom, but buyers want see a room for its original purpose. If you convert a room, make sure you can easily convert it back when it’s time to put your house on the market.
