Every boxer knows that when they step into that ring, it’s going to be a battle. The fight can turn in an instant, and one fighter who was seemingly dominant can find themselves knocked out flat on the mat. That’s why you need to take steps to avoid being knocked out.

How Boxers Can Avoid a K.O.

1. Strengthen the Neck

The trapezius muscles stabilize the head and neck, so developing them will better prepare you to withstand a potential knockout blow. Use isometric exercises that incorporate natural weight to build these muscles, and perform drills on a heavy bag while keeping a tennis ball tucked beneath your chin.

2. Maintain Proper Positioning

BoxerAn unseen blow is the most likely to result in a knockout because you don’t have time to brace for the impact. Avoid these hits by always keeping your eyes on your opponent and maintaining proper positioning.

Never square your feet, as this makes it harder to dodge a strike. Instead, stagger them with the dominant foot slightly behind the other. Keep your knees slightly bent to maintain your balance and make it easier to sidestep quicker.

3. Exercise Proper Defense

It’s unavoidable to walk out of the ring without getting punched at least once, but maintaining proper defensive tactics throughout the match will protect you. Keep your hands up on either side of your head to block incoming blows, and keep your chin tucked against your chest while biting down on your mouthpiece. A mobile target is harder to hit than a stationary one, so keep moving in the ring to prevent a haymaker from landing.
