There are several actions you can do with an old but functional fridge. You can sell it online, trade it in at a local appliance store, or ask your electrical company if they have a bounty program for reimbursement. If you fail to sell it or your fridge has broken down, and you want a simple recycling method, find a salvage yard, and follow the steps below.

How to Recycle Your Old Refrigerator

1. Remove the Freon

If your refrigerator uses the cooling agent freon, have a professional remove it. Because this greenhouse gas will damage the ozone layer, you must get rid of it properly. A professional will discard the freon correctly instead of leaving you to figure it out.

NOTICE

DO NOT CUT REFRIGERANT LINES

All refrigerant(aka”freon”) must be properly recovered in accordance with 40 C.F.R.Section

83.155(a) before delivery of items to Miamitown Auto Parts and Recycling, Inc.  We will not accept any appliances without the name and address of the person or company who recovered the refrigerant, the date it was recovered, and the customer’s signature.

2. Dismantle the Refrigerator

Using an adjustable wrench, recyclingremove the door by pulling out the bar connected to three or more bolts on top of the fridge. Then use a screwdriver to unfasten the bottom of the door. Follow the same method when removing the other doors. Remember to remove aluminum shelves, rails, and metal wires. These may be sold as scrap metal, allowing you to profit from your appliance.
