During the winter, most antique car enthusiasts store their classics rather than risk an accident on the road. However, garaging your prized vehicle has hazards of its own, which is why it’s essential to properly winterize your vehicle before storing it for the season. The do’s and don’ts below will ensure your meticulously restored classic car is ready for the show circuit when warm weather comes again.

Do:

Fill up the tank.

A full gas tank has less room for air, which carries corrosion-causing moisture into the fuel system. Fill up the tank one last time before storing your vehicle, and add a bottle of fuel stabilizer to keep the gas fresh. Running the engine for a while after filling up ensures that the stabilizer works its way through the lines, carburetor, and injectors.

Check the fluids.

Don’t:

Forget to air up the tires.

It’s normal for tires to lose air after sitting stationary for a few months, especially during colder weather. Airing up the tires beforehand will keep them from going flat, which could damage the rims.

Store your antique car off-site without checking the insurance policy.

A secure, climate-controlled storage facility is a great way to keep your vehicle safe from the weather and thieves, but some accidents may not be covered by your insurance policy. Check to make sure your insurance policy protects against any damage that might occur when your vehicle isn’t stored on your property.
