Before a property can be built, a foundation must be laid over the land beneath it. There are several additional and essential aspects to this preparatory stage, such as land clearing and excavating. If you’re interested in learning more about how foundations are installed, consider the guide below.

A Guide to the Foundation Installation Process

1. Preparation

The process begins by clearing the property of natural obstacles that could impede construction, such as trees, bushes, and other plants. The site preparation team will also clear away old stumps and large rocks, as well as roots within a foot of the ground’s surface. If any depressions are created in the process, they must be filled in before the next phase can begin.

2. Excavation

excavatingNext, the excavation crew marks the proposed site for the foundation, putting stakes in the ground at each corner and linking them with string. They’ll then use heavy-duty equipment like bulldozers to remove soil, sand, and other sediment from within this area. This allows enough room for a stable foundation to be embedded into the ground. To prevent the sides of the opening from caving in once the area is excavated, the contractors may add planks to the sides for extra support.

3. Foundation Installation

After the excavating phase, the contractors will mix the concrete and pour it into the excavated opening. Planks or troughs will prevent it from oozing out the sides. Over the course of 3 to 10 days, the concrete will cure (harden). Once it has set, the construction process can begin.
