A proper surveillance system has cameras covering all areas of the store, but sometimes budget costs won’t allow for such extensive coverage. However, there are specific areas that should not be overlooked. Here are some of the best spots to place your cameras if full coverage is not an option.

The Ideal Surveillance System Camera Placements

1. Entrance & Exit Points

Surveillance SystemIf something happens in your store, it’s best to have an image of the perpetrator instead of relying on your memory. Entrance and exit points include back doors, loading docks, and windows in the stock room.

2. Customer Interaction Points

Any place in the store where transactions take place is a must for surveillance systems. These areas may not be manned, but they still open up opportunities for criminals. Cameras should focus on monetary exchange locations and outside of changing rooms.

3. Parking Lots

Parking lot cameras are good for customers and employees. When it gets darker, customers want to feel safe coming and going to their car. Employees who close the store want the same security. As an added benefit, have more than one person present during closing, so no one has to walk to their car alone.

4. High Theft Merchandise Areas

Expensive items that are easy to pocket should remain behind counters or in glass displays and be watched by the surveillance system. Set up a sign telling potential shoplifters about the camera. The main purpose of camera surveillance is to prevent theft, but capturing them on video after the fact is a good benefit too.
