Button-down shirts are incredibly versatile. You can dress them up for business meetings or dress them down for outings with friends. If your button-downs don't fit properly, though, it doesn't matter what you pair them with because they’ll awkward on your frame. Thankfully, you can find perfectly fitted shirts every time you go shopping by keeping the following guidelines in mind.

What to Look for in a Button-Down Shirt

1. In the Shoulder

The shoulder seam should hit the top of your shoulders where the corner of the shoulder bone juts out. If it slides down toward the arm, the shirt is too big, or it was designed with a one-size-fits-all approach. If, on the other hand, the seam rides up toward your neck, the shirt is too tight across the back and shoulders.

2. In the Collar

Keep in mind that the collar size doesn't matter as much if you won’t be using the top button. You don't have to prioritize it when picking out casual button-down shirts.

3. In the Sleeves

The sleeves of a button-down shirt should taper so they highlight your arms without billowing. Generally speaking, the cuff should hit the base of your thumb when buttoned; however, you might prefer it slightly shorter.

There also shouldn’t be so much excess fabric in the armpit area that it sags. The armhole shouldn’t be so tight that it inhibits movement either.
