Insects aren’t the only pests that like to invade Alabama homes during the winter. Rats and mice rats also like to seek human properties for shelter and food. However, determining which type has moved into your home is not always clear. Use this guide to understand the differences between these rodents and how to determine if you need a pest control service to remove an infestation.

How to Tell the Difference Between Mice & Rats

The house mouse, brown rat, and black rat are the three most likely species you’ll find living inside or around a home. The house mouse is one of the most common rodents pest control experts must combat in Alabama. It can be identified by its small size—ranging from three to 10 centimeters and 12 to 45 grams. They also have large ears and a long, thin, hairy tail. You will also notice their short hair, which can vary in shade, from white or grey to brown or black.

Brown and black rats are much larger than mice. They average 16 to 40 centimeters long and weigh 150 to 300 grams; however, it’s not unheard of for them to grow larger. Brown rats are generally larger, but both types have small ears and hairless tails. These rodents also walk on the surface of their feet—unlike mice, which walk on their toes.

How to Tell If You Have a Mice or Rat Infestation

pest-control-Enterprise-ALIf you suspect one of these rodents has invaded your home, but you’ve yet to see them, look for signs of nesting, food tampering, and droppings. Mice tend to make soft, burrowed nests near their food source, which they repeatedly return to. Look for shredded paper and gnawed holes in dark spaces near cereals and other grains. Also, look out for small, pointed droppings.

Brown rats have similar nesting and food habits but prefer to make burrowed or grounded nests near water sources. As a result, they can commonly be found near sewer systems. Black rats, however, prefer to be up high and are known to build their nests under roof eaves and inside attics. They also prefer fruits instead of cereals and won’t go to the same food source over consecutive days, which can make pest control more difficult.
