Parents have seen their baby laugh so many times, but when families come for professional photos, there’s often nothing but silence—or crying—when you pull out the camera. Babies love to laugh and smile, but they don’t do it on command. To capture the perfect shot of happiness and laughter for your clients, these simple tricks can help.

How to Make a Baby Laugh

1. Ensure They’re Comfortable

Before you even take out the camera, help the parents keep their baby comfortable and happy. If the infant is hungry, tired, or in need of a diaper change, they aren’t as likely to smile or laugh. See to these needs first before attempting to stage a photo.

2. Be Expressive

Babies love funny sounds and movements. Dancing, clapping, playing peekaboo, and other quick movements can elicit a positive reaction. Pair these movements with unusual, unexpected sounds to increase your chances of success. Try making animal sounds, blowing soft raspberries, or even just clicking your tongue. Don’t make the sounds too loudly or you might scare them. Ask the parents if their baby laughs when they’re tickled; if so, have them do it for a cute photo of the family.

Camera3. Laugh

Laughter is contagious. If you laugh, your clients’ baby may laugh too. Babies begin to mimic around 3 to 4 months old, so keep this in mind before you set up the shot. If the baby laughs first, laugh back in response. They love it when you react to them, and laughing with them is an excellent way to keep it going for multiple photos.
