Fall is the perfect time to overseed, which is the process of planting seeds over an existing lawn. The warm days, cool evenings, and dampening soil are an excellent foundation for seeds to grow so that your lawn will be lush and bright when spring rolls around. With just a small assortment of lawn & garden equipment and a few expert tips, you’ll be all set to overseed your lawn this fall.

How to Overseed Your Lawn

1. Mow Closer to the Ground

To help your new seeds penetrate and reach the soil, you’ll need to mow your grass lower than usual, or between 1.5 and 2 inches tall. Before seeding, set your mower to a lower level and mow thoroughly, ensuring your blades are sharp for an even cut. Other lawn & garden equipment, such as weed whackers and trimmers, can be useful for sharp edges or turf near patios.

2. Remove Debris

Grass seeds need access to soil to grow, so it’s essential to remove any debris that might get in the way when you spread the seeds. Remove large debris before mowing, and after you mow, be sure to rake up all the leaves and grass clippings left behind. The tines should be close enough to collect all debris, but not so rough that they pull out healthy grass.

3. Dethatch Existing Lawn

Lawn & Garden Equipment Lexington, KYDethatching opens up patches in the topsoil for root growth and allows water to penetrate the soil better. It’s vital to dethatch your existing lawn before adding new seed to give your seeds plenty of healthy soil to germinate in. Your local lawn & garden equipment provider may rent or sell dethatchers that will work well with your soil and landscaping.

4. Spread Your Seeds

Use an overseeder to spread your chosen variety of seeds around the yard. If you’re planning to add fertilizer, make sure you lay it evenly before spreading the seeds so that they aren’t covered too deeply. Finally, depending on your soil and fertilizer method, rake the seeds into the topsoil gently to help them establish roots and germinate.

5. Water Effectively

The key to helping your new lawn grow is to water it regularly, but not so much that you drown the seeds. Watering with a gentle sprinkler or irrigation system once a week should be adequate for most homes. However, keep an eye on seeds and soil to ensure the dirt isn’t too moist or dry.
