As we age, it’s normal for shifts in our vision to occur. One such shift is known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common condition for people over the age of 60. Informing your eye doctor of any changes in your eyesight is essential for detecting this disease. To help you care for your eyes, here’s all you need to know about this.

What Is AMD?

AMD the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in seniors. It’s a result of the deterioration of the macula. The macula is the central portion of the light-sensing nerve tissue, or retina, at the back of the eye. This condition can come in two forms.

The dry form of AMD is the most common. It’s a result of the thinning and aging of the macular tissues and causes yellowish spots around the eye. These spots can increase in size and number over time.

The wet form is caused by an abnormal growth of the blood vessels under the macula. The buildup of fluids causes blind spots and a loss of central vision. The bleeding eventually dries up and leaves behind a scar, causing vision loss.

What Are the Symptoms?

eye-doctor-WIWith this condition, the loss of vision occurs gradually and painlessly. The most common symptoms include fuzzy or distorted vision. Some people even experience unexplained shadows in their sight.

Your eye doctor will detect the early signs and may perform an exam to check if your vision is blurred or distorted in any way. This is usually followed by a retinal exam in which your doctor will be able to detect distortion in blood vessels around the retina.

Who Is at Risk?

AMD is most commonly found in people over the age of 60, but can be detected in people as young as 40. It’s also most common among the older Caucasian population, affecting more than 14% of white individuals over 80. This disease is most common in females and can be linked to genetic factors.

Can Vision Loss Be Prevented?

Once signs are detected, there are steps you can take in the early stages to help prevent the condition’s progression. Avoid smoking and always wear protective sunglasses while you’re outdoors. You can also take precautions by exercising regularly and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.
