A lot of forethought must go into any move. However, when you have a lot of antique pieces, you need to plan more than usual to protect your expensive or heirloom items. Besides locating antique-experienced movers, you also must carefully pack each piece to prevent damage during relocation.

How to Pack Antiques Safely

1. Wrap in Protective Layers

Antique dealers generally recommend using a layered system when packing and moving expensive and delicate pieces. The first layer, which makes direct contact with the item, shouldn’t scratch or cause a chemical reaction. Glassine—a translucent paper with a wax-like finish—and standard tissue paper often assume this role due to their smoothness and their ability to resist air, water, and grease.

The next layer should provide shock and vibration protection. Blankets and bubble wrap are excellent for round and complex shapes, whereas cardboard is generally acceptable for flat surfaces and mirrors. After covering all sides and corners, secure the cushioning with packing tape.

2. Place in Durable, Fitted Boxes

moversHard, puncture-proof, wooden crates and boxes are common carriers for artwork, furniture, and expensive or one-of-a-kind pieces. Choose box sizes that are only marginally larger than the pieces you place inside. This prevents items from jostling when the movers pick them up and transport them in the truck.

Also, use plywood or cardboard dividers when adding more than one antique to the same container to keep them from bumping into one another. In the case of pottery and porcelain pieces, it’s even wiser to place a smaller box inside a larger one.

3. Fill in Spaces

To further protect against movement, fill in all remaining voids with either foam peanuts or packing paper. Bubble wrap can sometimes fit neatly between gaps and on top of items to prevent any jostling. Gently move the container to test for movement and determine if more padding is necessary.
