Whether you’re enrolled at a four-year university or community college, solid study habits are essential to your success. Even those who were able to navigate high school without much effort regarding studying may find their mid-terms and finals to be more difficult, with a much higher impact on one’s overall grade. With this in mind, the following guide offers advice for effectively retaining the information you need.

Do:

Take good notes.

Without writing down too much extraneous info, always take note of important class discussion topics and points your instructor returns to often in the lecture. Then use a highlighter or sticky notes to draw attention to the most crucial parts. If you know you are going to be absent from class on a certain day, ask if a friend could record the lesson for you.

The perfect study environment is different for everyone. For some, it’s being alone in a silent library, while others need to be surrounded by people or listening to music. Test out a few different atmospheres and see what circumstances help you concentrate best.

Don’t:

Cram the night before.

Procrastination is the enemy of effective studying. When you cram all the information in your mind the night before an exam, you’re much less likely to retain it. Good study habits come from pacing yourself and absorbing a little bit each day so you can avoid exhaustion and confusing facts together.

Waste time online.

As computers have become the norm in college education, it can be especially challenging to avoid distracting websites. Set boundaries for yourself so that your brain doesn’t have to constantly shift between tasks. Not only does this waste time, but it also prevents you from taking in as much valuable info as possible.
