With the cooler months of the year setting in, boating is a hobby that most people will set aside until the spring. After taking the boat off the water, many people place it in storage for safekeeping. But before you put it away for the season, make sure to follow the essential steps below to ensure your investment remains in top condition.

3 Steps to Take Before Storing Your Boat

1. Clean It

Clean your boat thoroughly before you put it away for the winter. If salt, pollen, and grime have settled on your boat’s exterior, they can cause tiny chips in the paint if they’re not cleaned. Spray the boat with water and use boat-specific soap to make sure the debris is thoroughly cleaned. Wipe down the inside as well to ensure that any salt that settled on upholstery and other surfaces is removed.

2. Change Your Oil & Coolant

storageYour boat’s fluids shouldn’t be allowed to settle inside it, especially over the course of several months. If your oil has accumulated salt and grime inside of it, it’s best to drain it and fill it with fresh oil so the contaminants don’t corrode your engine. Make sure to also change your coolant for the same reason. Before you put fresh coolant in, be sure to flush the system with water to get any lingering debris out.

3. Disconnect the Drive Belt

The drive belt is an important part of your boat, and it’s normally positioned at a very high level of tension. But prolonged tension, plus cold temperatures while in storage, can cause the belt to crack and break. As a safety precaution, disconnect the belt before you put your boat in secure storage. A similar problem may occur with the battery, as prolonged cold temperatures can drain it. You may want to disconnect this, too.
