Most parents don’t anticipate seeing their baby’s first tooth until they’re six months old. When they’re born with one already erupted, however, it can seem like cause for concern. While rare, this condition can raise a lot of questions. It’s essential to contact a children’s dentist, so you approach the situation correctly.

What Are Natal Teeth?

childrens-dentist-anchorageWhen a baby is born with a tooth—called natal teeth—there are four options. The tooth may be fully developed but loose, loose with no roots, small and barely protruding from the gums, or already erupted. This condition occurs in 1 out of every 2,000 births. It’s rare that a baby is born with more than one tooth, however, and typically, a lower front tooth is the one to erupt. While there’s no definitive cause of natal teeth, 15% of babies born with them have a family member who also had them.

What Are the Complications?

Natal teeth can be related to medical issues like Sotos syndrome, a facial development disorder, or Ellis-Van Creveld syndrome, which causes dwarfism in certain limbs. It’s essential to have a pediatrician take a closer look.

You’ll also want to connect with a children’s dentist. They’ll first determine the type of tooth and potential complications. They’ll then offer teething guidance since your newborn will start right away, rather than several months after birth. The tooth may interfere with feeding or lead to gum and lip lacerations. It may also injure the mother during breast-feeding. The children’s dentist will provide all the guidance, including how you can care for the tooth while the rest of your baby’s mouth develops.
