A cataract is a clouding over the eye's lens that results in blurry or fuzzy vision. Most cataracts are a byproduct of aging, with more than half of all Americans over age 65 having the condition to some extent. This condition is a leading cause of blindness, but with prompt intervention by an eye care professional, it can often be successfully treated. Get to know this common, but serious, vision issue in more detail below.

A Guide to Cataracts

Causes

The condition is the result of a breakdown in the proteins of the eye. The eye's lens refracts incoming light onto the retina in the back of the eye, which prompts the nerves to send signals to the brain. The brain then processes the signals and adjusts vision as necessary to see objects either close up or far away. With cataracts, the proteins in the eye cluster together and cloud over the lens, impeding its ability to properly refract light and signal the brain.

Symptoms

cataractsThe primary symptom of this issue is a loss of clarity and sharpness in vision that worsens over time. Vision is typically blurry or hazy, and bright colors might appear faded or less sharp. Double vision is also common. You may experience sensitivity to light and find it challenging to see in dim environments, especially when driving at night.

Treatments

Treatment will depend on the severity of the cataracts. If the condition is still in the earlier stages, an adjusted vision prescription may be all that is necessary to counteract its effects. If the cataracts are advanced and are interfering with a person's ability to live their life, surgery is often prescribed. The most popular type of surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a permanent plastic lens. Eye doctors will decide the best course of treatment to restore clarity.
