Generators provide your residential or commercial property with power during outages and blackouts, allowing you to continue with day-to-day tasks. For your generator to function when you need it, proper upkeep is vital over the years. Below, you’ll find a handful of electrical maintenance tips for your generator.

4 Ways to Care for Your Generator

1. Store It Properly

Most generators use regular unleaded gasoline, and if you store them with fuel in the tank, impurities in the fluid will corrode and damage the mechanical components. Before storing your generator in a cool and dry place, run it for about 15 to 30 minutes or until the gas runs out, and it automatically shuts off.

2. Replace the Oil

Generators periodically need fresh oil. Synthetic 5W-30 oil is recommended for generators since it remains stable at any temperature. After running your unit approximately every 30 hours, remove the seal on the end of the hose and drain the oil before replacing the seal and adding new oil.

3. Keep a Charged Battery

4. Change the Spark Plugs

Keep extra spark plugs handy; our owner’s manual should contain information about the best ones to use. Replace them after 200 hours of usage by disconnecting the plug wire, cleaning the area around it, removing the used plug, and inserting a new one into the empty socket. This will ensure that your generator receives the appropriate combination of fuel and air, which promotes efficiency and increases lifespan.
