Moving to a new apartment is as exciting as it is exhausting. Though you’ve imagined how your furniture and belongings will look in your new space, you may not have considered how they’ll actually fit. Laying out a new space is like a puzzle—although challenging sometimes, the solution is far from impossible. Before you start moving, here’s a quick look at what you should and shouldn’t do.

Do:

Think vertically.

Consider the size and shape of your furniture. If every piece in a room is short, it sets a general mood and tone in the room. Mix short and tall pieces in the same area for visual contrast. For example, add tall floor lamps to a room or add artwork to draw the visual focus upward. This makes the room seem elongated and ultimately bigger.

Group by size.

FurnitureIn some rooms, you may favor continuity over contrast. Instead of mixing pieces of furniture with different heights, group similar sized pieces together for a serene or peaceful look.

Don’t:

Wall yourself in.

It’s common for people to place larger pieces against the walls. In small spaces, this is a good idea to keep as much space open as possible, but if you’re working with a larger space, you have more room for creativity. Use bigger pieces in open spaces to divide or separate the room. Consider placing the largest in the center of the room to serve as a visual focal point.

Be afraid to downsize.

Bigger is not always better. Your furniture may have looked great in your old apartment, but if your new space is smaller, your current pieces will look out of place. Consider downsizing to a small apartment sofa or corner chaise.
