Polyurethane, also known as PUR or PU, is a plastic, rubber, or foam material. Its versatility and moldability has made it the material

of choice to enhance big budget sets and special effects, from simulating stone columns in a villain’s lair to creating realistic-looking human flesh. This 2-Part Mixed Material can be formulated to produce flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid cured products. While the versatile polymer has a wide range of applications, it’s especially common among haunted attractions during Halloween season. Consider the following to see how it can be used in your fall festivities.

A Guide to Polyurethane Halloween Props

What to Expect

Polyurethane material can be

molded into any shape, texture, or color. This means it can be used to create a wide variety of special effects and realistic props. From rigid plastics to soft, flexible rubbers, castable Polyurethane gives you many options for custom made props.  Lightweight Foam PU makes props easier to carry and safer to use around people and actors.

Fire Resistance

Health and safety

regulations can be felt through an increasing demand for fire retardant polyurethane from entertainment industries, specifically film & TV special effects, theme parks and theatrical performance set and prop builders. A polyurethane foam or elastomer with flame retardancy is the safest option regardless of what you are building. Some industries choose fire resistant grades for every element of their build to contain a fire and stop the spread if one broke out nearby.  Rigid Fire Retardant Polyurethanes are commonly used to make electronic component enclosures for animatronics and potting circuit boards.

How It Can Be Used

Polyurethane Foams can be seen in props and costuming. Often a “skin” of a flexible urethane elastomer will be brushed into the mold and backed with foam to create a realistic prop effect. Urethane foam is also often used to create “muscle suits” and “fat suits” that are worn underneath costumes to give the idea that the wearer is a different body shape.

Rigid urethanes are often used to make molds for foam latex and silicone makeup prosthetics. Sculpting forms for mask making, as well as Halloween Masks and Trinkets are also made using rigid Polyurethanes.
