From operating HVAC equipment to turning on lights, people use standby generators to keep their homes running smoothly during power outages. However, even a minor malfunction can cause inconvenient household disruptions. To ensure a continuous supply of electricity is delivered to your home when needed, schedule a replacement when you see the following signs.

How to Tell You Need a Generator Replacement

1. Fuel Costs Are Rising

As your equipment gets older, it won’t operate at full capacity. The effort to keep the system functioning places strain on the engine, alternator, and other mechanical components, which drains energy. This causes fuel consumption to increase, so you’ll notice higher fuel costs. Having to refill the reservoir frequently also means the generator is draining fuel too quickly.

2. Carbon Monoxide Levels Are Too High

Because generators run on propane, diesel, or gas, they produce carbon monoxide. Although the level of carbon monoxide is minimal, the gas itself is hazardous. Equipment should be installed in the open air so the vapors can dissipate, but you should keep a carbon monoxide detector close to the appliance in case of a malfunction. If the generator emits more carbon monoxide than normal, this could be a sign of damage to the mechanical system, causing it to run less efficiently.

3. Equipment Performance Is Sporadic

If the starter fails, the equipment won’t turn on altogether, so you’ll have to get out flashlights and candles to illuminate your house during a power outage.
