For veterans and military personnel, funeral arrangements may be made a bit differently than they would for a civilian. Family members of a veteran can arrange for a full honors service through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). You can also be reimbursed for part of the burial expenses. If you’re making arrangements for a loved one who has served the country, find out more about what steps to take below.

Who Is Eligible for Military Funeral Benefits?

As of July 2014, the VA offers reimbursement for family members who have paid for the funeral arrangements of a veteran who meets specific criteria. The veteran may not have been dishonorably discharged and must have been entitled to a VA pension. If they were not receiving a pension, you may still get reimbursement if they were under the care of a VA hospital or nursing home, or if they died due to a service-related injury.

For service-related deaths that occurred after September 11, 2001, families may be eligible for reimbursements of up to $2,000.

Reimbursements for deaths not related to service may amount to $796 maximum for funeral and burial expenses. This may vary based on when the death occurred and whether the veteran was hospitalized by the VA at the time of death.

How Do You File a Claim?

funeral arrangementsPayments from the VA are issued after the family has already paid for the funeral arrangements (either in whole or part) so the application process doesn’t delay planning. With that said, it’s important to keep track of receipts and statements related to funeral expenses, as these documents will be necessary.

You will also need a document proving the death to get your reimbursement. Ask your funeral home or cemetery to provide the statement of account, and the letterhead should include the name of the veteran, the nature and cost of services, all credits, and any unpaid balances.

When you’re ready to file a claim, you can do so online in this form or submit this paper application via mail. You may also visit your local VA benefits office and turn in the application in person.
