A well-maintained new vehicle can and should last for years. While new cars require much less maintenance than used or older vehicles, auto maintenance is still critical for keeping your vehicle running well and looking great for years to come. Here’s what you should know about maintaining your new car.

Regular Auto Maintenance You Should Be Performing

1. Change Fluids Regularly

One of the more frequent and important maintenance tasks you’ll need to perform on your vehicle is regular fluid changes. This includes changing your motor oil, wiper fluid, automatic transmission fluid, coolant, and more. As a rule of thumb, you should change or top off your oil every 5,000 miles or at least twice a year. During the oil change, inspect your other fluids and have them topped off as needed.

2. Change Heavily Used Parts Frequently

Change your air filter every 12,000 miles or when it becomes very dirty, and be sure to regularly inspect brakes and rotors for any signs of damage or heavy deterioration. Take your vehicle to a mechanic if you’re unsure what needs to be changed or fixed.

3. Maintain Tires

You won’t get anywhere without functional tires, so keep them maintained for longevity and safety. Check your tire pressure regularly, ensuring you’re on level ground and that the tires haven’t had a chance to warm up in the sun. Ensure that the tread is still deep and have your tires rotated every 5,000-10,000 miles.

4. Wash Your Car Often

Dirt, bird droppings, and dead bugs may not seem like an auto maintenance issue, but their effects on your vehicle can add up quickly. Dirt and grime will degrade paint, speed up rust, and clog or slow down moving parts. Wash your car several times a month if possible. Consider washing it more often if you live somewhere with a lot of dust, smog, or salt in the air. Be sure to clean the undercarriage and tires, and apply wax to keep dirt at bay.
