After a stressful workday or lazy day off, it can be difficult to find the motivation to hit the gym. Maintaining a routine is an important part of exercise, and if you’re having trouble, there are several solutions to try. Exercise offers endless health benefits ranging from heart disease prevention to joint health, so try the following when you’re feeling unmotivated.

How to Motivate Yourself to Exercise

1. Add Daily & Weekly Goals

Creating long-term goals, such as losing 10 pounds or being able to run 2 miles, is easy. It takes time to see results, however, which is why many people get unmotivated. Add daily and weekly goals to the mix. Commit to running at least a mile each day for five days, with two rest days each week. You’ll see how you’re contributing to your long-term goals each day, boosting your motivation.

2. Be Flexible

gymEvery workout doesn’t have to be long and arduous. If you’re feeling unmotivated, give yourself an easy day. Go to the gym and do some active stretching. Walk the treadmill at a slow pace while you listen to a podcast, and use resistance bands instead of free weights. These shorter, easier workouts still burn calories and will contribute to your overall goals.

3. Partner Up

Having a gym buddy is one of the best motivation tools. They’ll pick you up when you’re down, challenge you, and ensure you set aside mental roadblocks and make it to the gym. Your partner can be a close friend, a personal trainer, or members of a weekly fitness class. Practice a new workout each day to keep the routine interesting.
