If you’ve ever wanted to learn the art of Hawaiian quilting, head over to Sew Special, Kahului, HI’s one-stop shop for everything you need, from sewing supplies to quilting fabrics. Since 1978, this premier quilting store has been the go-to destination for Maui quilters.

New and experienced quilters alike understand that quilting is a time-honored tradition in and of itself, but many may not know that Hawaiian quilts take it a step further. Unlike traditional quilts that are made up of individual squares or pieces of fabric, Hawaiian-style quilts use large symmetrical appliqués constructed from a single cut on folded fabric. If you’ve ever cut snowflakes out of paper, that will give you an idea of what a Hawaiian quilt looks like. The quilts are usually created with a brightly colored floral design featured against a crisp white background. Like in traditional quilting with squares, Hawaiian quilting has small, neat stitches that trace the pattern of the design.

Quilting, just like other needle arts, is best learned by working alongside someone who has mastered the technique. Fortunately, Sew Special offers Hawaiian-quilting classes taught by an expert hand quilter. If you’re new to quilting, don’t worry. Sew Special offers kits that will guide you through the basics of Hawaiian quilting.

The Hawaiian quilting classes are taught in three-hour sessions by appointment only. The classes fill up quickly, so be sure to call Sew Special at (808) 877-6128 to reserve your spot. Visit the website to learn more about the other fabrics and sewing supplies available, as well as to take a look at some truly gorgeous quilt patterns.
