If you want to escape the chaos of the city, consider visiting the Catskill Mountains. Known for its awe-inspiring views and brilliant natural attractions, this region provides unparalleled opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to indulge in their love of skiing, hiking, biking, and fishing. Before you hop aboard your charter bus, here are a few fun facts about this area to get you even more excited.

What You Should Know About the Catskills

1. Incredible Wildlife Is Everywhere

You won’t have to look far after stepping off your charter bus to find wildlife in this area. The Catskills are home to thousands of American black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, foxes, coyotes, and river otters. The lush forests create diverse habitats for all types of creatures.

2. They May Have Created the Christmas Tree Market Trend

Legend has it that Mark Carr learned of the urban families that traveled to the region to find trees for Christmas. In a dire financial situation, he decided to bring some from his own farm to the city. He and his sons put them in a wagon and made the journey from the Catskills to Washington Market in Manhattan. Their Christmas trees were an enormous success, and Carr’s new venture spurred an enduring seasonal tradition.

3. They Influenced Hollywood

Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel served as the inspiration for the resort featured in the 1987 film, “Dirty Dancing.” Although the movie was set in the Catskills, it was actually shot at the Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, VA.

Unfortunately for any movie buffs wanting to catch a glimpse of the famed hotel, it was demolished in 2018.

4. Plant Life Is Abundant

Since the 18th century, botanists have recorded findings of the many plant species situated in the Catskills. Famed expert John Bartram would collect seeds to export to Europe, where they were purchased by owners of elite estates and botanical gardens.

In addition to common plants, there are also rare growths situated in some steep mountain gorges, where ice trapped in crevices allow species like the yellow birch and Eastern hemlock to thrive even during dry seasons.
