One of the benefits of having your own well is the complete control you have over the quality of your water. Water treatment is an important part of your well service. Choose your treatment plan depending on the type of water you have and the result you’re hoping to accomplish. Consider some of the most popular options below.

Popular Water Treatment Options in Wells

1. UV Sterilizers

UV sterilizers use UV lights to emit light waves through your water. As the water passes through the system, the light waves kill harmful micro-organisms by attacking its genetic code. It will destroy 99.99% of harmful microorganisms without adding any chemicals to your drinking supply. It kills viruses, cysts, salmonella, E. coli, typhoid fever, polio, cholera, infectious hepatitis, bacteria, coliform, giardia, cryptosporidium, flu, dysentery, and meningitis. The system can be installed at the point of entry for the entire house, and the lines will need be cleaned before installation.

2. Chlorination Systems

This system sends a sodium hypochlorite mixture of liquid chlorine into the water, and is often paired with filtration. The chlorine kills waterborne diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and cholera. Although the taste and smell of the water may be slightly affected due to the low levels of chlorine introduced to kill germs, the water is perfectly safe to drink.

3. Dirt Filters

Sediment filtration catches particles — such as sand, clay, silt, and dirt — that are suspended in your water. The water is sent through a filter medium, which catches the particles. This prevents the dirt from damaging plumbing and appliances over time. When combined with other filtration systems, these filters improve the efficiency of the other systems. For optimal results, it should be installed at the point of entry.

4. Rust Filters

Commonly called an iron filter, this system will treat iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. It removes excessive rust from the water as it passes through the filter material. This filter costs almost nothing to run and lasts indefinitely. It will prevent the consequences of rusty water such as the taste of iron, failing pumps, and rust staining. The small filtration tank is installed at the point of entry.

5. Water Softeners

Water softeners are used to treat hard water — water that has an unusual amount of minerals in it. It will remove calcium and magnesium. Hard water causes water spots, reduces the lifespan of plumbing and appliances, reduces the effectiveness of soap and leaves skin feeling dry and itchy. A softener uses ion exchange, or positively charged minerals in the water, to capture the minerals. It will require some maintenance when the tank is recharged.
