How Does It Affect Vision?

What Causes This?

Commonly, this condition will occur when a child is born with a single farsighted eye—or one that has trouble seeing up close. In this case, the healthy eye will compensate for the poor focus of the other and end up weakening it further.

Another possible cause is strabismus, or a condition that causes each eye to move independently. This sends two images to the child’s brain. To see clearly, the brain will block out one side.

How Can I Tell If My Child Has a Lazy Eye?

Often, parents will recognize amblyopia if they notice that their child’s pupils tend to wander or lack coordinated movement. Once poor vision occurs as a result, the little one may have trouble reading and watching TV, or develop frequent headaches due to eye strain.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

The best treatment will depend on the underlying cause. If strabismus is the cause, the optometrist may recommend eye surgery. During the procedure, ocular muscles are manipulated to help the child achieve greater control over their eye movement.

However, in most cases, optometrists will provide patients with a patch to wear over the strong eye. Blocking this side temporarily helps retrain the weaker side to function appropriately. They may also use medicated drops to blur the strong side so the weak one can develop fully.
