Halloween is full of fun spooks and surprises, but it contains some dangers that can be truly frightening for pet owners. Fortunately, it’s still possible to enjoy the holiday without needing a trip to the animal hospital. To keep your pet happy and healthy this Halloween, follow these important safety tips.

How to Keep Your Pet Safe During Halloween

1. Keep Candy Away

While it may be sweet for humans, Halloween candy can be poisonous to pets. This is especially true for candy that contains chocolate or xylitol. For this reason, store all treats away from your pets and tell your kids not to share their sweets.

If your pet does eat something they shouldn’t, contact an animal hospital for instructions.

2. Prepare for Trick-or-Treaters

Many pets can get anxious or aggressive when trick-or-treaters arrive at the door. If your animal doesn't do well around strangers or tends to run out the door, keep them in a confined area until visitors stop coming.

3. Choose Costumes With Care

While costumes can look cute on your pet, not all animals enjoy them. If your pet happens to welcome the idea, make sure the outfit doesn't harm them.

For example, the costume shouldn’t be too tight or loose, and there should be no choking hazards. Also, never leave your pet alone in a costume, and take it off if they’re panting or trying to remove it.

4. Microchip Your Pet

If your pet gets lost on Halloween, it can be hard to find them among the crowds. Some animals may even be scared by the activity and venture further away than usual. That's why it's a good idea to get them microchipped at the animal hospital. This identification chip will provide veterinarians and animal shelters with your contact information in case a stranger finds your pet.

5. Put Lit Pumpkins and Candles at a Distance

Curious pets often poke around open flames—such as those found within jack-o-lanterns or on festive candles. However, if they get too close, they may burn themselves or start a fire. To keep everyone safe, place these items out of reach or stick with battery-operated candles.
