A leach field, also known as a drain field, plays a crucial role in any septic system. Without proper leach field and septic system maintenance, the field and the rest of the system can fail. Understanding what a leach field does and how to take care of it can help you prevent septic system problems.

What Leach Fields Do

A leach field is a shallow, covered excavation that’s typically located in a flat, open area of unsaturated soil. After liquid wastewater is pretreated in the septic tank, it leaves the tank and enters the leach field. The field consists of a distribution box and a series of perforated pipes. Through these perforations, the pretreated wastewater filters through the surrounding soil, where naturally occurring bacteria finish the treatment process and turn the wastewater from your bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room into safe, clean groundwater.

Maintaining Your Leach Field

septic system maintenanceSeptic tank cleaning and pumping are essential aspects of septic system maintenance that keep your leach field functioning properly. On average, a septic tank needs to be pumped every two to three years, but this can vary depending on your water usage and the size of the tank.

To keep your leach field in working condition, avoid building, paving, parking, or planting on top of it. You should also divert excess water runoff from rooftops and drainage ditches away from it. Your field may be failing if you notice a foul odor or standing water on it, and you should contact a septic system maintenance expert about leach field restoration immediately.
