Changing the filters should be a major part of any HVAC maintenance schedule. While most HVAC routine checks will need an HVAC technician, this is one task you can do yourself. Almost all filters are easy to change, so there’s no need to feel overwhelmed. Before you get started, here’s a brief guide to HVAC filters to give you a better idea of what they are, why you have them, and how you change one.

A Beginner’s Guide to HVAC Filters

What Are HVAC Filters Used For?

HVAC filters are used in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They can be cotton, polyester, or fiberglass, and their performance depends on their material. The filter is inside your HVAC unit, and it cleans the air within. Remember that they have a finite life span. You’ll need to change most filters every 12 weeks, but you should check the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure optimal performance.

Why Do You Need to Change Your HVAC Filter?

HVAC technicianHVAC filters become cluttered with dust particles, pet hair, pollen, or anything borne through the air of your heating or cooling systems. However, a filter can only do its job if it’s clean and functional. A blocked filter can cause your HVAC system to overheat and break. A repair of this kind requires an HVAC technician, and is easily preventable for just the price of a filter.

How Do You Change an HVAC Filter?

  • Power off: Turn off the power to your HVAC unit.
  • Remove or open the access panels: Carefully detach the panels covering your filter.
  • Remove your filter: Gently pull your filter out of the HVAC unit. Note the direction the arrows are pointing for the next step.
  • Insert the new filter: Make sure the arrows indicated on the side of your filter are facing the correct way, then slide the new filter in. If it jams, pull it out and try again, or jiggle it in case it’s stuck.
  • Replace or close the access panels: Pop these back on just as they were.
  • Power on: Turn your HVAC unit back on.
