Whether it's at the city, county, or state level, when you're running an election, reaching your core constituency requires visibility. If you want to get your message and values across, you need to get your name out there, and one of the best ways to do that is with tried and true signage. Posting campaign signs on your supporters' yards is a commonly used strategy because it works. However, merely having a visual representation is never enough; it needs to be designed well. To make the most of your lawn display, here's what you need to do.

How to Make Your Campaign Lawn Signs Stand Out

1. Start With the Essentials

At its most basic, every campaign sign needs to have the candidate's name, the office for which they're running, and any legal disclaimers required in their area. If you share a last name with a fellow candidate, or it's something commonplace, it's best to include your first name.

Once you have these critical components, only then you can consider adding symbols or photographs. Always try to provide enough negative space around these elements; if things are too crowded, it can be difficult for an onlooker to focus on what matters, particularly if they’re driving by.

2. Prioritize Legibility

signsAn effective campaign sign is a legible one. As beautiful or interesting as some typefaces or color combinations may be, if they make things difficult to read, don't use them. The typeface should be bold and comprehensible.

Both serif and sans serif are acceptable, but avoid script-type and decorative styles; the latter is often difficult to read, especially from a distance.

As for color combinations, aim for high contrast. If your lettering and background are too close in hue, value, or saturation, people won't be able to read them. When in doubt, err on the side of simplicity.

3. Know the Intended Area

The intended locations will impact the design. If they’re primarily for suburban neighborhoods, where the streets are narrow, and the speed limits barely reach 25 mph, you can use a relatively small sign. However, if they'll be near a freeway or just a busy street, they'll need to be bigger since the cars are much faster.

Additionally, the size will affect whether you can add a slogan or your first name. Depending on the position for which you're running, you may need a variety of sizes for different areas and, therefore, slightly different designs.
