The appropriate eyewear will protect your eyes from the sun’s rays. Sunglasses that block 99% or more of both UVA and UVB rays are recommended. Wear them any time you’re outside during the day—even if it’s cloudy or snowy. 

2. Find Shade

Shade is no substitute for protective eyewear, but it does limit the UV rays your eyes encounter. Find shady spots to relax in or wear long-brimmed hats to protect your eyes. It’s especially important from mid-morning to -afternoon, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

3. Use Sunscreen

eye careSunscreen can protect your eyelids from the sun’s rays. Find one that’s specifically designed for use on the face and eyes, as other sunscreens can cause irritation or damage. It should be broad-spectrum, which protects against UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of at least 15.

4. Be Careful in Areas That Make It Worse

Some situations can increase your exposure to UV rays. High altitudes experience stronger UV rays than lower ones, so take extra precautions and avoid the day’s strongest rays. Reflective surfaces like sand, snow, and water are also hazardous, as they reflect the UV rays back into your face.
