The spooky season is upon us, and little ghosts and ghouls are preparing to fill their bags with sugary treats. Although they are delicious, candies and sweets can cause a variety of dental issues, such as toothaches. Maintain a strong hygiene routine by brushing and flossing thoroughly, and utilize these tips to let your children enjoy their candy without experiencing any oral issues.

How to Protect Your Smile While Enjoying Halloween Treats

1. Opt for Sugar-Free

Sugar feeds the bacteria in the mouth, which can accelerate the development of decay and toothaches if allowed to linger. Look for low- or sugar-free candy varieties, like gum, in your child’s trick-or-treat stash to deter bacteria from growing.

2. Avoid Chewy Varieties

toothacheAlthough sweets, like chocolate bars and powdered sticks, contain high levels of sugar, they’re easier to brush off teeth than gummy or chewy options, such as taffy. When you eat soft, sticky treats, like gummy worms and caramels, additional saliva is needed to break down sugars, causing these candies to linger on and between your teeth longer.

3. Steer Clear of Hard Treats

Lollipops and jawbreakers can cause toothaches because they constantly expose the mouth to sugars for an extended period. Additionally, if your children bite down on hard candy, they may fracture or chip a tooth, and bacteria can penetrate the fissure.
