On warm days, you use the air conditioner in your car to cool down. The air it supplies should be refreshing, not foul-smelling. If you encounter any odors coming out of your vents, here are some ways to identify their causes and when to head down to the auto shop for a fix.

Why Does Your Car AC Smell?

1. Mildew Odor Means Moldy Vents

If you detect a musty smell, you may worry your entire vehicle has succumbed to mold and bacterial growth. Even if you don’t spot any, the problem may be deep in your vents.

Excessive moisture within the AC unit can lead to mold growth. Take your vehicle to an auto shop to get your vents cleaned. To prevent this from happening again, leave your fan on after turning off the AC to dry out any remaining moisture.

2. Gas & Oil Smells Mean You Have a Leak

auto shopIt’s normal to smell gas or oil after you put either into your car. However, these odors should dissipate within minutes. If the smells persist, your vehicle may be leaking one of these fluids, and the air conditioner has picked up the vapor from outside.

Oil leaks can affect your vehicle’s handling on the road, while gas is flammable, so have an auto mechanic address the leak immediately. They may need to repair a hole in your gas tank or engine.

3. Burning Rubber Could Mean a Hose Issue

Your car relies on engine, brake, and coolant hoses to carry fluid and air where they need to go. When one of these hoses becomes disconnected due to an oversight or impact, it may come in contact with a hot part of your engine and begin to melt, resulting in a burnt rubber smell.

Ensure all hoses are connected properly, or take the vehicle to the auto shop to have it looked over. Any burnt hoses should be replaced.
