During the winter, your septic system is subject to different types of stress. Although designed to withstand the heat and the cold, there are common cold-weather septic issues to be aware of. Here’s a list of preventive measures to take to avoid costly emergency repairs when temperatures fall.

3 Winter Septic System Problems

1. Frozen Parts

When the ground freezes, the cold affects more than the soil. It also has an impact on septic system pipes, the tank, and other components. Freezing temperatures may cause cracks and leaks. It can also slow the growth of bacteria in the tank, and waste may not decompose as it should. To protect your septic tank from icy frost, cover it with an insulating blanket, and plant vegetation nearby to help protect it from cold crosswinds. In addition, use your system every day to keep it operational.

2. Difficult Pumping

Take care of system maintenance if the fall, especially if it’s been a while since your septic tank was last inspected or pumped. You should schedule septic inspection and cleaning as soon as you experience slow draining. Also, have any leaky faucets in your home fixed. When water trickles into septic pipes, it may freeze and damage your sewage system.

3. Compacted Drain Field

If the drain field surrounding your septic system becomes compacted with snow, ice, or parked vehicles, wastewater won’t filter and drain properly. Also, compacted soil doesn’t provide sufficient insulation, increasing the risk of freezing. In the fall, aerate the soil in the drain field to help prevent compaction, and never park any vehicles in the drain field to keep the earth loose.
