Hearing aids have come a long way since their inception. While this means a better experience for people with hearing loss, it can also make the selection process a bit confusing. The following guide breaks down the common types and styles of hearing aids, so you have a better understanding.

Types

Analog devices amplify all sounds equally. The aid picks up sounds from your surrounding environment and uses a speaker to make them louder. While some can be programmed for different situations, they generally don’t filter out extraneous noises. To change settings, the wearer often has to press a button, which cycles through different sound environments.

Digital aids have a computer chip that makes for more advanced sound processing. They amplify important sounds while reducing background noise. They can also be programmed to match a person’s exact type of hearing loss.

Styles

Both analog and digital aids are available in a variety of styles, including the following:

  • Behind-the-Ear (BTE) – BTE aids are made up of a plastic case, which rests behind the ear, and an earmold, which fits into the ear itself. This style is durable and resistant to moisture and dust.
  • In-the-Ear (ITE) – For people who want a less-noticeable hearing aid, ITE styles are a good choice. These devices contain all the necessary components within the earmold and a remote control that changes the settings.
  • Mini BTE – Mini BTEs work similarly to traditional ones, but they provide more comfort for the wearer. The plastic casing is smaller, which makes it less cumbersome. These models also tend to be a bit more discrete.
  • Completely In Canal (CIC) – These hearing aids are custom molded to fit in the ear canal. They are most commonly purchased by users wanting limited visibility of the hearing aid.
