A well-maintained driveway increases your home’s curb appeal while requiring minimal upkeep. With proper care, your asphalt paving can last up to 20 years and stay resistant to outside elements like wind and rain. On top of regularly sweeping and rinsing your driveway, follow the below guidelines to get the most out of your investment.

How to Make Asphalt Paving Last

1. Redirect Water

Water gets into driveway cracks and freezes on colder nights. The frozen water then expands, resulting in larger cracks and even potholes. Make sure your sprinklers aren’t spraying your pavement to prevent this issue.

Also, regularly clean your gutters. Overflowing gutters can drip onto the driveway and weaken the material over time. A decorative stone border can redirect water during seasons of heavy rain.

2. Clean Oil Spills

Bulverde Asphalt PavingWhile oil stains are eyesores on an otherwise clean driveway, they can damage asphalt paving. Left untreated, these marks seep into your driveway and soften the material. This leaves the pavement more vulnerable to erosion. To avoid this problem, clean up spills as soon as you notice them.

For a natural solution, cover the stain in kitty litter and leave it out overnight. Be sure to properly dispose of the litter, as it is now a contaminant. You can also use a commercial degreaser to wash and wipe up the stain.

3. Drive Carefully

The driveway gets a little softer in the summertime naturally, because the sun warms it up for hours at a time. Avoid turning the car wheels sharply, or when the car isn’t moving. This can dent the asphalt, making it more susceptible to potholes.

Enter and leave your driveway slowly; driving too fast can damage the edge of your driveway and speed up cracking. You should also avoid parking heavy equipment on the driveway, like boats or campers.
