As any auto insurance professional will tell you, Halloween is a risky evening to be out and about. For drivers, it's dangerous because there are an unusually large number of small pedestrians out, crossing streets—often not at a signal—and darting into traffic. For parents, it's scary because drivers are distracted by Halloween decorations, cute costumes, and other trick-or-treaters. To prevent problems, here are some safety suggestions for all involved.

What Should Drivers Do?

Auto-insurance-Mebane-NCNever drive while wearing a mask, and leave costume props that might prove distracting in the back seat.

Drive slowly through any residential areas, and be ready to stop in an instant if children suddenly dart into the street.

Take care when entering or exiting a driveway, and be aware that some trick-or-treaters might do something that you'd consider foolish. It may just be that they are wearing masks or costumes that impair their vision and cannot see your lights or car.

Only permit experienced drivers to operate on Halloween. It is not a good night for permit learners or newly licensed drivers. And, make sure your auto insurance premiums are current and paid in full.

What Should Parents Do?

Outfit each child with a flashlight or glow stick to make them more visible, and make sure all costumes feature reflective tape strips for safety.

Encourage the kids to stay together and cross streets as a group. Tell your children to never enter a stranger's house or vehicle without a familiar adult present.

Set a time limit by which they must be home, and give the oldest child a watch or digital device with a clock.

Also, tell the kids to stay on the sidewalk, except at designated crosswalks. If there is no sidewalk, have them walk on the left shoulder of the road, facing traffic. If you are not in attendance, work out a route in advance and insist the kids adhere to it.
