Although fall doesn’t have the same reputation as spring for causing allergies, it does produce a few allergy-causing nuisances. About one in five people are allergic to ragweed pollen and may start to develop hay fever in early August when flowers mature. Mold is another allergen commonly encountered in autumn when leaves drop and rainfall increases. If your symptoms start to flare up in fall, use the following HVAC system tips to keep the inside of your home free of these threats.

How to Use Your HVAC System to Create an Allergy-Free Home

1. Clean the Outside Unit

During the summer, your HVAC system’s outside condenser unit may develop a layer of dirt and dust. To prevent these and other particles from ending up inside your home, turn off the unit and use a soft brush attachment to vacuum any debris clinging to the exterior fins. Afterward, remove the grille and fan. Carefully wipe down the unit’s interior, and spray the fins with water from the inside out.

2. Use HEPA Air Filters

Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating of 11 to 13, as these are designed to filter tiny particles like pollen, pet dander, and mold without affecting the system’s air flow.

3. Schedule Duct Cleaning

The air in your home continually passes through the ductwork in your home. After a while, dust, dirt, hair, pollen, and mold will start to collect in your ducts. When this happens, you’ll likely notice an increase in dust throughout your home, and your allergy symptoms may intensify. An HVAC contractor can vacuum your ducts clean and inspect them for leaks, which may allow unfiltered air to seep in.
