With snow, ice, high winds, and plummeting temperatures being common in Upstate New York, winter can wreak havoc on your garage door. As a result, it's important to take time each fall to get ready for the colder months. To help you do that, below are some timely garage maintenance tips.

How to Maintain Your Garage in Autumn

1. Check the Weatherstripping

Your garage isn't meant to be airtight, but the door helps prevent the cold air and other elements from infiltrating your home. To do that effectively, the weatherstripping along the sides and bottom must be in good shape. If it's worn or missing, you could find yourself spending more to heat your home than necessary. If it's bunched and tangled, it could prevent the door from closing fully. Inspect for damage and replace it as necessary.

2. Tidy Up

Garage doorThis might be the last chance to organize your garage while the weather is still warm, so take this time to clean up. Sweep up any dust and debris; power-wash the floor to remove any automotive fluid stains; and organize tools, boxes, sporting goods, and other stored items. While tidying up, keep an eye out for potential problems, such as signs of mold, water damage, or termite activity.

3. Ready Any Seasonal Items

While you are organizing, move fall and winter seasonal items so you can access them easily. For instance, get out your leaf rakes and snow shovels. Also, test any snow removal equipment to make sure it's working properly. Does the snowblower start easily? Does it need fuel or oil? It may seem premature to worry about winter issues now, but it won't be long before the snow falls. You'll be glad you've identified problem areas in advance.

4. Inspect Springs & Test the Garage Door Opener

A garage door weighs hundreds of pounds, and the springs must support all or most of this weight. Rust and corrosion could eat through the springs and weaken them, making the door unsafe. Inspect the springs to ensure they’re strong and firm, and then test the garage door opener’s automatic open function. It should not close if an object is obstructing the photo-eye that points along the path of the door.
