From brochures to form letters, you might send all sorts of business collateral to clients. Even the smallest mistakes can hurt your company image, which is why you should go over the designs carefully before sending digital files to a print shop. Here are a few points to add to the checklist.

3 Areas to Check Before Sending Designs to a Print Shop

1. Bleed & Crop Marks

To know how far the design should extend to the edges of the paper, print shop technicians will look for bleed marks. To ensure the design takes up as much or as little of a business card, form, or banner as you prefer, include the marks as a guide. Crop lines should be easily visible along the perimeter, too, as they let printers know where to trim the paper.

2. Colors

To make the colors as accurate as possible, check the settings in the design program. Turn off the red, green, and blue (RGB) tab and double-check that the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) option is selected. This gives you more control over the color ranges for printed materials.

3. Text

From a slogan to the company address, read over all of the text on the design for accuracy and clarity. Typos are glaring mistakes that aren’t easily ignored. A professional proofreader should look over the copy, making sure it is free of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. From a design perspective, remember to change the font layers into shape layers. Otherwise, printouts could look distorted.
