October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual campaign is embraced by women’s health clinics, hospitals, and family doctors in hopes of increasing overall awareness of the disease and when to seek treatment. Here’s what you should know about breast cancer screenings so you can detect issues early on and spread the word among loved ones.

How Often Should You Go to a Women’s Health Clinic for a Breast Cancer Screening?

Approximately one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer. Breast cancer screenings or mammograms at a women’s health clinic can help with early detection as these images identify tumors before they can be felt and when they’re most treatable.

Women's Health ClinicHealth care professionals recommend annual mammograms for women over the age of 40. Because of previous physical examinations or based on your family history, if your physician believes you’re at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, annual screenings should begin at the age of 30.

How Do You Perform a Self-Breast Exam?

Beyond annual mammograms, women should make a habit of performing self-breast exams at least once a month. Start by standing in the mirror with your hands on your hips. Examine your breasts for symptoms like rashes, swelling, redness, or changes in color, shape, or nipple position.

Next, raise your arms and check for any nipple discharge. Then lay flat on your back with one arm raised and tucked behind your head. Use two fingers from the opposite side hand in circular motions to check each breast for lumps. Use medium pressure and continue these circular motions around the entire breast and up into your armpit. If you notice any issues, schedule an appointment at a women’s health clinic.
