If a winter garden is part of your landscaping vision, now’s the time to start mapping it out so you can finalize what you’re going to plant. To ensure the vegetables and flowers you choose will thrive all season long, keep the following tips in mind.

Vegetables

To have a steady supply of fresh, local produce all winter long, confirm your growing zone before planting any vegetables. South Carolina ranges from USDA Zone 7a to 8b, so make sure the seeds you choose have your particular zone on their label. Generally speaking, hearty vegetables like peas, spinach, squash, pumpkins, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale thrive in the winter climate here.

Annuals

Cool-season annuals landscapingwithstand heavy frosts, so they’ll thrive in South Carolina, even if the winter happens to be especially harsh. Including annuals in your landscaping plans will mean more work because you have to plant them every year; however, their breathtaking colors are well worth the effort. Some of the brightest flowers to add to your winter garden include calendula, sweet alyssum, primrose, and snapdragon.

Perennials

If you want to enjoy a burst of color in the garden year-round, add a few varieties of perennials to your landscaping plan. Look for flowers that are native to South Carolina and can handle the annual temperature fluctuations. Examples include the winter honeysuckle, black-eyed Susan, daylily, and Shasta daisy.
