If you own a classic automobile or another vehicle that you don’t often drive, rent a storage shed for it rather than leave it on the street or allow it to take up space in your driveway or in your garage. But before you put your car and truck in vehicle storage, prepare it for safekeeping. Here are some do’s and don'ts of readying a car for storage.

Do:

Clean it.

Clean the interior and exterior of your vehicle before putting it into storage. Dirt and debris that settle on the body and upholstery cause stubborn stains and corrosion. Wash and wax the exterior, and give the interior a thorough vacuuming and shampooing.

Schedule maintenance.

Don’t:

Forget to inflate tires.

If your tires don’t have enough air in them, the weight of your vehicle will damage the rubber while your vehicle remains parked from month to month. Before parking your car in a vehicle storage facility, inflate the tires according to the manufacturer’s suggested tire pressure found on the driver’s door panel.

Leave valuables inside.

Although storage units are safe and secure, remove any valuable items from your vehicle before you store it. Don’t, for example, leave an expensive sweater in it. Any valuables should be stored separately so you don’t have to worry about misplacing them.
