Tooth loss can make it difficult to chew food, maintain an even and healthy bite, and present a full, bright smile to the world. Fortunately, most causes of tooth loss can be prevented with proactive oral care and routine dentist visits. Below are three causes of tooth loss and how you can reverse each of them.

A Guide to Common Tooth Loss Causes

1. Gum Disease

Gum disease is an often-overlooked epidemic, with up to half of all Americans getting it. It also accounts for a staggering 70% of all cases of tooth loss. When bacteria aren’t adequately brushed from the gums, they create decay, causing inflammation, swelling, and bleeding of the tissue. Over time, this compromises the integrity of the gums, and they cannot firmly anchor the teeth in place. Combat gum disease by brushing and flossing at least twice daily and having the pockets between the gums deep-cleaned by a dentist.

2. Cavities

dentistCavities are tiny holes in the teeth that develop from the buildup of decay. If a cavity goes untreated, it will only worsen, often to the point that it can jeopardize the pulp and root of the tooth, two important structures that help keep it in place. Prevent cavities by brushing and flossing, using a mouthwash with fluoride, and seeing a dentist at least twice a year; if cavities are present, have them filled as soon as possible.

3. Trauma

Trauma or injury to the teeth can easily knock them out. A forceful impact will crack or chip off a part of a tooth or dislodge it from the gums entirely. To avoid this, protect your teeth, mouth, and face from injury. If you play sports, wear a mouthguard. When riding a motorcycle or bicycle, always wear a helmet, and, in the car, a seatbelt.
