As fall comes around and temperatures drop, you start depending on your HVAC system to maintain the warmth, comfort, and safety of your home. But before firing up your furnace this winter, there are some things you should do—and not do—to ensure it's prepared for more frequent use. Consider these do's and don'ts as you begin your fall HVAC maintenance.

Do:

Check the thermostat.

The thermostat controls your HVAC system, which means it needs to work properly for your home to have comfortable levels of heat this fall and winter.

Set the temperature setting to a high level and confirm that the furnace engages as it should. If the thermostat has programmable settings, check that they meet your needs for the upcoming season. If the thermostat display is blank, faded, or sluggish in responding, change the batteries.

Change the air filter.

HVAC systemThe furnace's air filter collects dust all year. To improve your airflow, energy efficiency, and air quality before the winter, switch out your filter for a new one. If yours is sturdy with a plastic frame, it's a permanent filter that can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner wand instead of getting replaced.

Don't:

Put objects in front of your vents.

As part of your HVAC system's fall maintenance, do a thorough inspection of all the vents in your home. If objects or furniture are blocking the vents, move these items away to guarantee proper airflow. Also, look for signs of dust buildup on vents and wipe them off as needed.

Neglect the air conditioner.

Air conditioner use has been winding down, making this an ideal time to get your outdoor unit ready for the winter. Change the air filter and remove dirt, fallen leaves, branches, and other debris that may have fallen on or in the unit. Also, turn off the power switch—usually located along one of the inside walls of the unit—so the AC doesn't automatically turn on if someone accidentally adjusts the thermostat setting.
